Reinhold Messner dedicated a museum project with five extraordinary locations to the mountains and their culture. The Messner Mountain Museum is a meeting place for meeting the mountains, humanity, and each individual. The main museum, the "Messner Mountain Museum" MMM Firmian at Sigmundskron Castle near Bolzano documents the conflict between human-mountain. The spacious museum areal impresses with the Sciliar and the Tessa Mountain Group on the outside, and art, installations, and relics on the inside. The routes, steps, and towers lead visitors from the inside of the mountain, where the development and the exploitation of mountains are documented, to the religious relevance of a peak as a means of orientation and bridge to the afterlife, all the way to the history of mountaineering and the alpine tourism of modern times. The other museums: MMM Ortles in Solda is dedicated to glaciers, the eternal ice; MMM Dolomites at Monte Rite south of Cortina is dedicated to the topics of rock and alpinism in the Dolomites; MMM Juval at Juval Castle in the Venosta Valley is dedicated to the myth of mountains. The opening of a 5th museum is planned for 2011: MMM Ripa at Brunico Castle which will present the topic of alpine population.
